eMentoring Africa (eMA) is an organization recognized and registered in Kenya with the aim of capacity building Kenyan youth and teenagers by empowering them to navigate through life challenges of massive unemployment, political exploitation, drug addiction, idleness, HIV/AIDS pandemic and recruitment into crime gangs by outlawed sects. eMA fulfils its mission through online and face to face mentoring of youths in communities, groups, schools and colleges; coaching vulnerable youth on feasible economic activities; and education forums on responsible and accountable lifestyles.
Kenya has set an ambitious Vision 2030, to become in two decades a mid-industrialized nation rivaling the Asian Tigers. There is little chance of the country achieving this goal without an educated, focused and productive workforce, a significant number of which are young people. The youth comprises 75 per cent of the nation!
But our youth are at risk. The 2008 post-election violence tore open wounds of shattered hopes, following decades of economic disparity. Unemployment rate, estimated at over 40 per cent, is unacceptable. A pervasive hopelessness is palpable. Restlessness among teens and young adults quickly turns into widespread frustration and anger. In 2008 alone, over 300 high schools were closed following student unrest. Kenya's youth vastly have no role models, no positive mentors and little to aspire to.
What structures are there to help steer our youth into a bright future? Who is there for them in their hurricane years of indecision that prelude adulthood? Whose is the persuasively authoritative voice that will steer them from the fateful abyss of idleness, drunkenness, drug intoxication and crime?
